I’ve been giving this quite a bit of thought lately – how do you define a Christian country? Is it one that contains more than 50% of it’s population as Christians? That’s something that America has seen change recently, with their percentages dropping below 50% for the first time.
Politics is not government, although without one you might not have the other! We often get our backs up when ‘politics’ enter the church, but we’re open to a governing structure, sometimes ones that are man made.
Let me ask a question: If the government was run identically like my/your church, would it encourage people to become more Christlike? Would it be an institution you’d be proud of and get involved in?
Please let me speak with the greatest sensitivity here: I’ve heard church people complain and moan about their brothers and sisters, for example: they don’t get it, or they’re getting in the way of moving forward, or there’s power struggles going on over issues, or if only they would get involved with this, or digging their feet in protestation or rebellion… I’ve heard it from leaders down to pew warmers, including from myself.
But … doesn’t that sound like *nearly* all Conservative vs Labour tussles?! “The party opposite are just so out of touch” for example. One difference that comes to mind is that they’re a lot more open about their feelings…
