Love your enemies. Only when it’s easy?

There’s a meme going around that goes like this:

Jesus: “Love your enemies. Do good to those who hate you.”
Onlooker: “But Lord, what if they’re Muslim?”
Jesus: “…Ok, let me start again from the beginning.”

I’ve found myself having a love/hate relationship with this meme and its variations!

Oswald Chambers’ blog today…

We do not grow into a spiritual relationship step by step— we either have a relationship or we do not. God does not continue to cleanse us more and more from sin— “But if we walk in the light,” we are cleansed “from all sin”  1 John 1:7 says “But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.” It is a matter of obedience, and once we obey, the relationship is instantly perfected. But if we turn away from obedience for even one second, darkness and death are immediately at work again.

Ignored truth in worship songs

Every Christian at some point in their lives will have sung words and probably skimmed over the weight of them. They’ve probably forgotten that sometimes the words encourage and challenge us to live as per a disciple of Jesus and not pewfodder.

Jesus doesn’t want followers. He wants disciples. I think I may have said that in a previous post.  It’s a strong challenge to me to not be a passive luke-warm out spitted individual, but to strive in the private times, the secret times, to honour God.

Here are a few snippets from worship songs that you may have sung at some point during your life. There’s truth, promise, grace, freedom, blessing, release, and it’s so easy to skim over them without seeing the depth of his love and the call to action.

Praying is not like Google!!

It’s easy and quick to find staggering amounts of information through using an online search engine like Google. However, the ease of acquiring information that way can lead you to feel more powerful than you actually are and make you impatient with how long it sometimes takes to hear answers to your prayers.

It is ‘fruit’ not ‘fruits’

Gal 5:22-23 – The well known verses on fruit of the Holy Spirit. Some people point out that it’s fruit singular, not fruits.  One fruit incorporates all the different elements. If they’re from the Holy Spirit, they are supernatural.

Bored in the pews

A friend on Facebook recently wrote “God made His holy presence so evident in worship last evening; Overwhelmed, speechless, humbled, thrilled.” – and I really *really* want that for our church congregation. I don’t envision going into the wacky realms of dancing in the isles, but I get discouraged when I see the bored look on people’s faces.

Thought for the day: Sermon length

The average parable of Jesus can be taught comfortably in under a minute.

And, I’m done!

God is all powerful?

The bible talks about how nothing is impossible for God (Luke 1:37) and that he has good plans for us. However, we look at the suffering around us and in us, and we can begin to ask the question, “Is God in control?” We know that God is good, but if God is also all-powerful, why doesn’t he just end the suffering?

Worship Event 1

A few months ago I planned a special worship evening. I felt that our congregation weren’t really engaging in the Sunday morning sung worship, and as a worship leader I felt it my responsibility to step up and offer a time of extended worship to try and break through the tiredness of ritualised repetitive Sunday mornings and stoke the fires of love.

Below is what I planned for the service.

3 good arguments

There were 3 good arguments that Jesus was Black:
1. He called everyone brother
2. He liked Gospel
3. He didn’t get a fair trial

But then there were 3 equally good arguments that Jesus was Jewish:

Loving worship too much

It’s not the worship that God wants us to enjoy – it’s him.
